The new two-piece grinder is 2.75" in diameter. Both sides have super-strong neodymium magnets in the center, giving the grinder a satisfying snap when the two pieces come together.
The magnets keep the grinder together when not in use. The 2-piece grinder is only 1" tall, making it great for traveling.
Two-piece grinders go hand in hand with rolling trays. These types of grinders require the ground herb to be dumped out onto a flat surface or into a larger container. Smokers often require a special tray with curved edges and Rick & Morty designs to roll their doinks.
I spoke with the Proper Doinks guy about their grinder preferences, and they were quick to recommend the Santa Cruz 2-piece hemp grinder. They declined to offer their reasoning for this preference. They also sell a Proper Doink branded 2-piece Santa Cruz Shredder.
Many smokers will consume all of the weed that they grind when they grind it. They don't have leftovers to store, which is why they don't see the benefit of a 3 or 4-piece weed grinder.
Two-piece grinders don't stop until you do. A couple of quick turns before dumping will yield a coarse grind, perfect for blunts and old-school convection vaporizers.
To achieve a finer grind, keep turning until you feel the crunching stop.
Finer grinds are easier to remove from the hemp 2-piece grinder teeth. Coarsely ground herb tends to stick more.
Santa Cruz Shredders shine with their fine grind, and that's what I'm usually aiming for.
Dry herb vaporizers are much more efficient than smoking. Vape users can get high off of .25g or less, while smokers are typically rolling up a gram with each burn. That's the difference between the 26% THC extraction rate of combustion vs the 76% extraction rate of vaporizers.
Vaporists get higher off of less weed, which means they have weed leftover after grinding a nug. 2-piece grinders don't offer any storage solution. 3 and 4-piece weed grinders have a built-in section made for holding ground herb.
Most dry herb vaporizer users are dedicated to vaping and prefer a 3-piece grinder. Some use a 4-piece grinder to collect kief.

The teeth on these hemp-based plastic grinders are designed differently from those on the traditional metal Santa Cruz grinder.
These grinders will not live as long as an aluminum or stainless steel weed grinder, but they last longer than I expected!
I have yet to push a hemp Santa Cruz Shredder to the point of failure, but I haven't dedicated myself to it yet.
My aluminum Santa Cruz Shredder teeth also show significant wear, but the grinder is still fully functional after 10 years.
I've heard from several smokers who use their hemp grinder daily and haven't had to replace their grinder in years.
I'm cautiously optimistic until I can test one of these hemp grinders further.
Even if the teeth on the hemp grinder go dull after a year, replacing this grinder every year may be cheaper than a metal grinder!
These hemp grinders are affordable and come in a few different sizes, colors, and configurations. The newest Large Hemp grinder with magnets is the 2-piece.
